ONEPLUS 5T, Real flagship killer? .... worth the hype? A Review

Oneplus hasn't been around for a long time but it has made a reputation of its own in this short period of time. Oneplus has been suprising us since it launched its first phone in 2013. It was the first time that a chinese startup company without any reputation or name went on and build a phone that became very popular among people in no time. Oneplus became estabilished among us customers in a very short time and started competing with flagship smartphone manufacturers in no time. Infact Oneplus showed that it could go on and build flagship level phones at an affordable price.

The oneplus 5t is the latest addition to the Oneplus family. As opposed to releasing just one smartphone a year, this time Oneplus went ahead and launched the Oneplus 5T just two months after the oneplus 5 was launched. In fact there isn’t much difference between the oneplus 5 and oneplus 5t regarding their internal configuration and price. The difference comes with the looks, people were complaining that the Oneplus 5 looked 2016’ish , so the company went ahead and launched the Oneplus 5T which was capable of competing with the smartphones released in 2017.

The Oneplus 5T has a bezel less display with an 18:9 aspect ratio(~401 ppi density) and 2160x1080p resolution on a 6.01 inch screen(~80.0% screen-to-body ratio). Oneplus still likes to keep a lower resolution than its rivals for better performance and battery life but this time they have put an Optic AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, with 16M colors instead of the usual IPS LCD screens. So the screen is much brighter than the Oneplus 5 and it looks vibrant and colorful. By going bezel less Oneplus had to replace the fingerprint scanner from the front to the back and it feels  more comfortable. The screen is Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which is much sturdier than the older gorilla glass 4. Oneplus has used Anodized aluminium like last time to build the phone.

Oneplus has tried to preserve the software experience here. The UI is almost stock Android with some minor tweaks as of Oxygen OS. The phone has a battery capacity of 3300mAh which will last you through a whole day. The phone comes preloaded with features such as Face Unlock. The Face Unlock uses some software programming to detect your face and process it but is not as secure as Apple’s Face ID used in iphone X as apple uses 3d mapping for Face ID. Even though 5T’s Face Unlock is less secure than the Face ID, it is much faster than Apple’s Face ID. It unlocks instantly. It even works at low light settings. It seems like Oneplus has really tried to optimize the new feature.

As of now Oneplus 5t comes with Android 7.1.1 Nougat and will be updated to Android 8.0 (Oreo) sooner this year. It comes with Qualcomm MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 Octa-core (4x2.45 GHz Kryo & 4x1.9 GHz Kryo) processor and an ADRENO 540 GPU which is same as the oneplus 5’s configuration. It is available in two variants as 128 GB, 8 GB RAM model or 64 GB, 6 GB RAM model. The camera has got better with dual rear cameras. One is a 16 MP camera with f/1.7 aperture (27mm, 1/2.8", 1.12 µm, gyro ) with Electronic Image stabilization and another one is a 20 MP camera with f/1.7 aperture (27mm, 1/2.8", 1 µm),capable of low light photography. It could record 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30/60fps, 720p@30/120fps. the secondary camera is a 16 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture (20mm, 1.0 µm) with gyro EIS, Auto HDR, and could record 1080p videos. Oneplus has failed to introduce optical image stabilization even with the Oneplus 5t. They have introduced a new feature known as Electronic Image Stabilization, but it is not as stable as the optical image stabilization.

The phone supports Oneplus’s Dash Charge (5V 4A) and charges really fast. The phone feels very premium in hand and feels much faster. The phone gives a screen on time of more than 6 hours on a single charge and could last a full day with moderate to high usage. The phone is available in 4 colors as Midnight Black, Lava Red, Sandstone White (128/8GB only and it costs about 500 EUROS or 559$ as of oneplus’s official website. It is one of the best phones available as of now. It competes with flagship level phones like the Apple’s iphone X and the Google’s Pixel 2XL which costs more than 1000$.
