Iphone 6, still usable in 2018? 4 years later, Revisited

Iphone 6 was released in 2014 and marked the new era for apple. It was one of the most sold out phones of apple. Apple followed the similar design for four years even up to the Iphone 8 and 8 plus which looks similar to the Iphone 6. But how does it hold up in 2018?

Apple launched Iphone 6 with a bigger 4.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen (16M colors) display (~65.8% screen-to-body ratio) and with a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels, 16:9 ratio (~326 ppi density). It came with apple’s then latest apple A8 chipset and a Dual-core 1.4 GHz Typhoon (ARM v8-based) processor along with Power VR GX6450 (quad-core graphics) and was powered by 1Gb of DDR3 RAM.  The phone came with iOS 8 preinstalled and is upgradable to the latest iOS 11. The phone had a Non-removable Li-Po 1810 mAh battery (6.9 Wh). The phone had an aluminum unibody design with dimensions 138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm (5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 in) and weighed 129 g (4.55 Oz). The Iphone 6 had the same first-generation fingerprint sensor as the Iphone 5s. Apple introduced Apple pay with Iphone 6 and the phone came with NFC capability. The phone came of course with a 3.5mm headphone jack supporting 16-bit/44.1kHz audio which was great at that time.

It came preloaded with 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band Wi-Fi and personal hotspot and with Bluetooth 4.0, A2DP, and LE. The Iphone 6 spotted a primary camera of 8 MP with f/2.2 aperture (29mm, 1/3", 1.5 µm), phase detection autofocus and dual-LED dual-tone flash capable of shooting 1080p@60fps and 720p@240fps. The phone had a secondary camera of 1.2 MP with f/2.2, 31mm and was capable of shooting 720p@30fps. The cameras were quite similar to the Iphone 5s with minor tweaks. The Iphone 6 is available in 3 variants as Space Gray, Silver, Gold and is available with storage capacities of 16/32/64/128 GB.

After 3 years especially with the iOS 11 update the phone is struggling hard. It lags wherever possible and it even slows down opening system applications like dialer, contacts and camera etc. while using new applications or playing games we could certainly feel the phone lagging a lot. The phone in fact is struggling to run the new software. I think it slows even more than its predecessor Iphone 5s. Generally, the battery backup has been affected for devices running on iOS 11. The phone could get a usage time of about 4-5 hours on light to medium usage. The battery drains too fast when doing some heavy tasks like playing games or watching videos on HD. The phone performs much better on iOS 10.3.3 than on the iOS 11.

So, if you are planning to buy an Iphone 6, even though you could find the phone for about 200$ just think about the fact that it would slow down gradually, and apple would be stopping its support for Iphone 6 from next year onwards as it probably won’t be having an iOS 12 update. If you could find Iphone 6 with iOS 10.3.3., then go ahead and buy one because it could perform well but never update it. It is wiser to go for an Iphone 6s if you could spend some more, or you could go on and buy the Iphone SE which performs much faster and better even than the Iphone 6s and would cost you around 200$.

Most of you might Be wondering what this Zune is? Well, most of you might not even have heard about "ZUNE." It's primarily because Zune was not that popular, especially outside the United States. Zune is a music player developed by Microsoft as a rival for apple's iPod. Even though Zune came out with pretty respectable specs, it couldn't compete against the already popular iPod versions.
